Los índices de audiencia son la clave de la duración de una serie de televisión. Cada año docenas de nuevas series estrenan en la televisión norteamericana, compitiendo con series veteranas para captar una audiencia que los mantendrá en aire por un buen tiempo. De este numero de nuevos programas solo una fracción logra asegurar una temporada completo, y un numeró aun más pequeño logra regresar en la próxima temporada televisiva.
Generalmente, las cadenas estadounidenses anuncian su lista oficial de series renovadas y canceladas al finalizar la temporada televisiva cada mes de mayo. Sin embargo, algunas series reciben una notificación temprana de renovación o cancelación dependiendo en sus índices de audiencias.
